Fall 2008 Initiation
Mu Chapter, of the University of Georgia, celebrated the initiation of its 2389th man Sunday Nov. 9th. This exciting event drew attendance from over fifteen alumni to witness the pledge class of twenty-four become initiated into the brotherhood of Sigma Nu Fraternity. This years pledge class was arguably the most diverse class since the re-founding of Mu Chapter in 2005. Out of state students include Gunnar Kenney of Charlotte, North Carolina, Thomas Fisher of Salisbury, North Carolina, Jason Goldman of Long Island, New York, Timothy Convy of Vienna, Virginia, and Stephen Sells of Nashville, Tennessee. This pledge class is already demonstrating their leadership in many facets of the University outside of the fraternity. Jason Evans is a member of the executive council for the College Republicans with his fellow pledge brothers Thomas Fisher and Christopher Green as active members. Brothers Kyle McDonald, Jared Smith, and Bryan Crabill are members of the prestigious Honors program. Wesley Robinson and Christopher Green are both actively involved with the selective freshman component of the Student Government Association, Freshman Forum. Equally as impressive is Stephen Callaway’s membership within the Redcoats Marching Band, Will Ginn’s involvement with University Theatre, and Stephen Sells, Lee Sutton, and Jason Evans’ active campus ministries involvement.
Mu Chapter was also very excited to initiate a very special person, that Sunday as well. Mr. Setliff was a pledge in the old Chateau in the early 1950’s. Unfortunately, he never had the opportunity to become initiated at that time, as he had to fulfill his duties to serve our country. Finally, after waiting over fifty years, (as a standing pledge to many of his close Sigma Nu friends), Mr. Setliff was initiated to a standing ovation.
Aside from the initiation ceremony, Mu chapter was also proud to present Betty Hearn, wife of Judge George Hearn (M 1048), and Carolyn Hester, the wife of the late Cecil Hester (M 1089) with much deserved sweetheart pins. This year’s initiation was a family affair; with Bill McCorkle (Beta Theta-Auburn University) present to witness his son, William McCorkle’s initiation. Mr. Verner Chaffin (M 0621), Dean Emeritus of the UGA Law School, and his son, John Chaffin (M 1738) from Miami, Florida were also on hand. Following the initiation ceremony, alumni and brothers alike were able to view the blueprints for the ongoing construction of the new house on the site of the old Chateau on River Road. The groundbreaking ceremony for the house was held on October 21, 2008. Completion is expected during this upcoming July, just in time for move in for the fall semester.
