Mu Recognized on the National Stage
The 2009 College of Chapters held last week in Lexington, Virginia at the campuses of Washington & Lee and Virginia Military Institute proved to be very rewarding for Mu Chapter. All 180 Sigma Nu Chapters participated in this year’s College of Chapters – representing over 10,00 active students and nearly 220,000 Sigma Nu members. The many activities during the five day experience culminated in the Awards Ceremony at the Stonewall Jackson Chapel on the VMI grounds. Mu took home three distinguished awards that evening:
The Manpower Award: Given to all chapters with at least 80 active brothers (Mu has over 90).
Operational Excellence Award: Earned by only two other chapters.
Values Based Leadership Award: Earned by only five other chapters.
Mu was the only chapter to take home both of the Pursuit of Excellence Awards.
Additionally, two brothers of Mu chapter were recognized individually:
Active George Ward (Mu 2308) given the Alpha Chapter Initiate Award – awarded to those who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the ideals of the Legion of Honor and whose pattern of performance is a worthy example for others to follow (Mu’s SECOND Alpha Affilaite – Tom Johnson, M1232 was our first).
Alumnus Verner Chaffin (Mu 621) given the Regent Medallion of Merit Award – awarded to those who exemplify eminence in his daily life as expressed by the CREED of Sigma Nu, who demonstrates a genuine commitment to the ideals of the Legion of Honor and whose pattern of performance on behalf of the chapter and the General Fraternity is a worthy example or model for others to follow.
These awards add to the accolades taken home by the chapter at the Grand Chapter of 2008 and are a direct reflection of the Chapter’s committment to excellence. Mu Chapter is the oldest continually chatered Sigma Nu chapter and proud of its 136 year history at the University of Georgia.
