Michael Barry

Q) Why did you join? I had graduated high school with a class of 19. I wanted to expand my horizons and join a group at UGA that would help me make the most of my 4 years at UGA (and then beyond). Also, Tom Greene, John Hearn and Lee Landrum would not stop calling my house.

Q) What year was your pledge class? What was your PIN number?

Fall 1989; Mu 2071

Q) What year did you graduate? 1993 (Undergrad), 1996 (Law), 2005 (MBA)

Q) What was your major? BBA Finance

Q) Tell us about your favorite memory of the fraternity? Too many to list here – both during my years on campus and since. My best friends today are my fraternity brothers.

Q) What is your favorite campus memory? Did you participate in other activities on campus? Meet me at the Chapel at 11:59, in a suit.

Q) What kind of influence has the fraternity had on your life since graduation? One of the most important lessons I learned was that in any meeting, there are 3 categories of people: in front, your supporters, in the middle the ones who are only there because someone told them to come and in back, the troublemakers who demand that you are prepared each and every time, but who over time can be your biggest supporters. Also, dreaming without doing is just that – dreaming. Execution on a plan makes all the difference because nothing gets accomplished without specific action.

Q) With whom do you still stay in contact? Who would you most like to find? Rob Pease, Rob Hunnicutt, Kevin Morris, John Hearn, Andy Ramsey, Tom Greene, Kurt Kronauge, Luther Lockwood, Robert Fowler, Alan Brown, Robert Durham, Jim Bishop,

Q) Tell us about your family: Have you married? Do you have children? Not married (yet), no children.  Much to the chagrin of my parents, my sister made her decision to attend UGA in 1992 when she came to visit Athens. It had snowed that weekend and she thought that sliding down the hill at River Road on cookie sheets and throwing snowballs on the front lawn was more fun that could be had anywhere else. She was right!

Q) What other activities or organizations were you involved with during your college days? Officer at Sigma Nu (Academic Chairman, Commander), IFC (Treasurer), The Order of the Greek Horsemen, the Order, Blue Key, Gridiron.

Q) What is your nickname, if applicable, and how did you get it? n/a

Q) Did you live in the house? If so, who were your roommates? Tell us about a memorable time with them. I lived in the House for one year – 1991-1992 in the Commander’s suite. It was an absolutely great time. I remember bolting my window’s shut so Ron Ward wouldn’t take me “camping”. The summer of 1991 (living in the house and taking 2 classes while “getting ready for football season”); “walking the property” with Judge Hearn before football games. There are more memories from those 4 years than I could possibly put here. Outside of the house, I lived with John Hearn and then Kevin Morris, during law school; Rob Hunnicutt and Rob Pease at Eagles Nest; and with Jimmy Bishop (a KA) at Cloverhurst.

Q) What do you do for a living? Partner with Epstein Becker & Green, P.C., a national law firm.

Q) What affiliations do you currently have and/or public service do you participate in? Peachtree Presbyterian Church; University of Georgia Terry College of Business.

Q) Do you have any suggestions for the Actives? For other alumni? What you put into the Fraternity will determine what you get out of the Fraternity, but I can promise you that your receipts will greatly outweigh your deposits, no matter what you do.  Mind your grades and always act on your aspirations – talking and dreaming (whether in college or elsewhere) will not result in much.

Alumni – the 10 minutes you give to the Active Chapter will be among the top 5 moments of giving you will have all year. The Active Chapter is an impressive group and your direct involvement with them will have a tremendous impact today and tomorrow.
