Mu News – Fall Semester Recap

Attention Brothers and Alumni

Hello Brothers, Mu Chapter is planning on having an alumni weekend on February 26th.  During the day there will be Clay Shooting and afterwards we will come back to the Chateau for catered food.  We look forward to having you back in Athens!

Semi-Formal

On Thursday, December 2nd, the men of Mu Chapter and our dates drew the semester to a close with Semi-Formal.  The event was hosted at Boar’s Head Lounge, where brothers gathered to enjoy The Josh Bennett band, who had also played during the tailgate for the Kentucky game earlier in the semester. The event was a hit, as many brothers sang along to classic songs performed by the band.  This was a great night of brotherhood and fun, and it was a perfect way to bring the social calendar of the year to an end.

SEC Championship

On Friday, December 3rd, many of the brothers made the trip down to Atlanta to watch Georgia face Alabama in the SEC Championship. Many parents and alumni were gracious enough to host the brothers.  The freshman and sophomore pledge classes gathered at Brother Ferrara’s (Eric M2012, Emilio M2815, Luke M2866,) house for a cookout and to watch football before the night’s festivities. We then journeyed to Big Sky, a venue in Buckhead to enjoy live music from our very own band, The Localists.  The brothers awoke on Saturday and attended a tailgate near the Benz with live music and food trucks, along with a projector screen to watch the game.  As the game commenced, the mood was dampened. A Dawgs loss is always terrible, but it was not enough to ruin a good weekend of Brotherhood. We’ll show Bama what we’re about in Indy.

Social Recap

The social calendar got off to a hot start with the annual Skate Night Date Night on September 30th at Fun Galaxy Roller Skating Rink. Brothers and their dates came dressed in bright 80’s clothing and skated along to 80’s music. Many brothers were dinged up the next day from lack of skating abilities. The following date night was an all-time favorite, French Chateau. On November 11th, Brothers and their dates sported cheese and baguettes, berets and turtlenecks, mimes, and faces with curly-q mustaches. Many brothers were seen dancing and singing along to another great local Athens band performing in the basement. The fall semester date nights were capped off with our Semi-Formal. The event was at Boar’s Head lounge where brothers and their dates drank and danced to the fantastic Josh Bennett band.

Not only was the semester filled with fun and exciting date nights, but also weekly chapter socials were arranged with sororities such as ADPI, Chi-o, Kappa, KD, Phi Mu, Theta, and Zeta. Freshman and sophomores filled the house while the Juniors and Seniors congregated in downtown. Many brothers mentioned how nice it was to catch up one-on-one with sororities as well as some of their most memorable nights of brotherhood.

Philanthropy

In our first semester without Covid-19 restrictions since spring of 2020, Mu chapter did our best to take advantage of the new rules. We did this by putting on Jam for Cam, the Classic City Open, a candidate car wash, and volunteering at Extra Special People. Jam for Cam was a huge success as we had over 5,000 people come and we raised over $175,000. The momentum that we have continued to grow towards this event is very exciting and we hope to continue to grow this number in years to come. This was our second time putting on the Classic City Open, in which we had 84 players and raised $5,200. This event has been a hit amongst the active members as well as their parents, and we plan to continue putting on this event in the future. Our freshman car wash has started to make noise around the Classic city, as this is the third year in a row we have done it. Many members of other fraternities and sororities help support this car wash, leading to us raising $450, which we donate to Extra Special People.  We have also continued to require our freshman to serve with Extra Special People at least once throughout the first semester, and we ran a fundraising booth at their fall festival. This was fun for the active members as well as the kids at Extra Special People, especially because of our popular fair booth: pie in the face. Overall, we have created and rekindled a lot of momentum towards our philanthropy efforts this semester, and we plan to carry this into the next.

Christmas in Athens and at home

As the semester comes to an end for the students, Athens puts together Christmas festivities and winter events that not even Jack Frost would be disapointed in.

At the Sigma Nu house the holiday spirit came as decorations were put inside and outside the house in a wonderful display or Christmas.  House Manager Ethan Leoni, along with help from others, spent a lot of time putting up Christmas lights and blow up decorations around the house.  They even decorated a few Christmas trees out back.  This year on December 2nd, Athens once again hosted its annual Christmas parade.  The parade started on Pulaski and continued on Clayton then Washington while finishing on North Thomas streets.  The warm weather saw a huge turnout of what city officials described being the biggest effort they’ve seen. Many of the floats stuck to the theme Candy Cane lane.  Until January 9th, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia offered a beautiful light display of Christmas.  With the Classic Center hosting Christmas music performances and ice skating, Athens is a winter wonderland come Christmas time.
