Interview with Alumnus Clay Milling about Real Minded
This past week I had the opportunity to sit down for an interview with Clay Milling (M2627). He and his brother, Will (M2755) founded a company called REALMINDED. The company was created to inspire people to “get real about your mind” and open up about mental health in order to break down the stigmas surrounding it. They founded the website last May and have had a lot of success. When asked why they created the website, Clay said a lot of the reason is because of the mental health struggles he’s seen and experienced with himself, his family, and his friends. Mental health is a serious issue and the Milling brothers want to continue to raise awareness and help destigmatize the matter.
When they initially started the company, Sigma Nu was a huge help to them. Many active brothers and alumni helped by sharing their story and spreading word about the website. REALMINDED is not just a brand, it is also a community and it thrives when people share their story. People “share their story” by opening up about their issues and ways they work to improve their mental well being. Clay said it can be really inspiring and motivating to see other people share their experiences and how they are getting real about their mind. Check out their website and share your story at REALMINDED.com
The Backpack Project Philanthropy
This month, Mu Chapter partnered with The Backpack Project to help underserved kids in the Athens area. The Backpack Project is a non-profit that provides backpacks full of essential supplies such as food and toiletries to kids in need. The brothers got together with a few representatives from the Backpack Project one afternoon, and we packed 100 backpacks for needy children. We packed the bags with snacks, towels, school supplies, and toiletries. It was a great success and everyone was glad to have another opportunity to give back to our community.
Cover Band Party
On February 19th, the brothers of Mu Chapter hosted a band party. The cover band “Rooster” performed throughout the Saturday afternoon. Many brothers gathered around the stage to sing along to many classic songs from The Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, and many more. Following the band was DJ Masto, who played into the night. It was an awesome way to spend our Saturday afternoon and many expect to see Rooster again soon at another event.
Sigma Nu in IFC Golf tournament
In late February, brothers Chris Rita, Emilio Ferrara, Jon Domescik, and Luke Ferrara competed in the IFC golf tournament benefiting UGA Miracle. The tournament was organized by brother Trey Williams. A cold and windy day gave the players some trouble on the brutal UGA golf course. The Sigma Nu team finished in 5th place, at 8 under, out of 11 teams. Although it was not their best performance, it was a good day on the links and they will be looking forward to competing in the tournament again next year.
